About Seychelles
The Seychelles has a colorful history dating back to the 16th century. The French
were the first to start settlements in the uninhabited islands. Permanent settlements
were started by the French in 1770 for a period of forty years the next three centuries
the islands frequently changed hands between the French & British.
During this time the islands grew spices and traded in coco for oil and coconut
by products. In 1835 the Seychelles abolished the slave trade, (Slaves were brought
over from Africa to work on the coconut plantations) and in 1853 Catholic Church
was established by visiting missionaries of the Roman Catholic Church.
In 1976 the Seychelles gained its independence from the British to become a republic
that was self governed. In 1977 a new constitution established a one party regime
(the second Republic) until 1992 when multi parties were legalized again. In 1993
a constitution established the third Republic.
The Seychelles remains to day a vibrant melting pot of cultures were Seychellois
speak three languages, Creole, English and French are always ready with a smile
and willing to assist were they can. Seychellois attend one of the many Catholic
Churches though out the Islands and have developed their own spicy Creole Cuisine
that is also enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
